Phu Quoc Golf Guide

Phu Quoc is Vietnam's big island in the Gulf of Thailand: beaches, sunsets and large resorts. It has one main golf complex, so it works best as a beach add-on rather than a golf base. Here is what to expect.

Vinpearl Golf Phu Quoc

The island's golf is at Vinpearl Golf Phu Quoc at Bai Dai, near Ganh Dau in the north of the island. It is a 27-hole complex designed by IMG, set among old hardwood forest with streams and reservoirs through the layout. The three nines are named Nha Trang, Phu Quoc and Quy Nhon, each par 36, and the course is seashore paspalum from tee to green. Advance booking is required and caddies are compulsory. Some listings show the course closed on Wednesdays, so check the day before planning a round.

Phu Quoc versus central Vietnam

For golf, central Vietnam is the stronger choice: five or six championship courses within about an hour of Da Nang, against one complex on Phu Quoc. Phu Quoc's strengths are the beaches, the sunsets on the west coast and the resort scene. If your group wants one or two rounds and a lot of pool time, it works. If golf is the point of the trip, base yourselves in Da Nang and Hoi An.

Getting there

Phu Quoc has its own international airport, with domestic flights from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. From Australia, most travellers connect through Ho Chi Minh City. A few days on Phu Quoc can be added to the end of a southern golf itinerary.

Practical notes

  • Book tee times in advance; the course does not run on walk-ups.
  • Paspalum greens are firm and grainy compared with bent greens at home. Allow for it on putts.
  • The west-coast beaches are the place for sunset; the north of the island is quieter.
  • Check current opening days before travelling, as published hours vary.
