Thanh Lanh Valley Golf Resort: A Playing Guide for Golf Groups
Hanoi & the North
If your Vietnam golf has happened entirely within sight of the sea, Thanh Lanh is the round that completes the picture. It's the antithesis of the Da Nang resort experience: quiet, elevated, and shaped by a lake and the Tam Dao foothills rather than a beach. I've brought groups here when the coast started to feel familiar: and it resets the trip every time. This guide covers how the course plays, who it's for, and how to build it into a northern golf block that actually works.
The layout
Thanh Lanh is a proper mountain-valley test: elevation changes that make your rangefinder honest, and holes where the safe miss is dictated by slope rather than bunkers. The routing folds around the lake, and water comes into play enough that a conservative game plan saves you five shots without ever feeling defensive. From the back markers it's a genuine examination; from the whites it's playable, walkable golf that still asks a question on every approach. This is Vietnam's highlands golf at its best: a completely different character to the coast.
How it plays
Two things matter here that you never think about on the coast. First, altitude: the ball flies a touch further and your coastal numbers will be wrong: trust your caddie on the par 3s. Second, the morning window: mist sits on the water until mid-morning, which is beautiful, and exactly why I book the latest comfortable tee time rather than the earliest. The turf is firm and the ground game works: you can putt from off more greens than you'd expect, and your caddie will read those slopes like a book. Take an extra club into the elevated greens and don't be brave with the driver on the lake holes; position wins here.
Who it's for: and who should skip it
For: repeat Vietnam visitors who want a second region in the trip; groups mixing Hanoi sightseeing with golf; anyone who rates course character over clubhouse gloss. Skip it if: your group wants ocean views from every tee or a resort pool directly off the 18th: that's a Da Nang conversation, and I'll happily keep you there.
Getting there and pairing it
Plan on roughly 90 minutes from central Hanoi by private car: we coordinate the vehicle with your tee time so you're not rushing the range. It pairs perfectly with Sky Lake for a two-round day, or sits alongside Kings Island across a northern block. The full sequencing logic lives in my Hanoi golf and city guide.
Season and weather
October through April is the window I'd recommend without hesitation: cool, clear mountain air and firm, fast conditions. Summer brings heat and afternoon storm risk; if that's your only window, take the early slot and keep the afternoon clear.
Planning notes
Caddies are part of the experience here and non-negotiable in the best way: read my caddie and tipping guide before you go. Northern tee sheets are easier than Da Nang's, but weekends still fill; we handle the booking as part of any northern itinerary. If you're weighing the north against the coast, the best time to play guide breaks the regions down month by month.
What to carry for the round
Pack for changing conditions rather than the temperature at your Hanoi hotel. A light layer is useful on cool or misty mornings, while sunscreen, a hat and water still matter once the cloud lifts. Bring enough balls for the lake holes and use the practice time to check carry distances before committing to a club. The drive from Hanoi also makes this a poor day for forgotten shoes, medication or rain gear, so confirm the golf-bag checklist before departure. We normally leave a practical buffer between the planned arrival and tee time for check-in, changing and a short warm-up.
FAQs
How far is Thanh Lanh from Hanoi?
Plan on 90 minutes each way by private car: which is why we schedule it as a full morning, never squeezed against an afternoon round.
Can beginners enjoy it?
From the forward tees, yes: the elevation actually helps carry, and the walk is gentler than the scenery suggests.
Can you combine it with Ha Long Bay?
Easily: it's one of the cleanest northern combinations. Give us your dates and we'll sequence the golf and the cruise so neither feels rushed.
