Experiences
Son Tra, the Lady Buddha and Marble Mountains
Two of Da Nang's best sights sit at either end of the city's beach: the Son Tra Peninsula to the north and the Marble Mountains to the south. Each fits neatly into an afternoon after golf, or a morning on a rest day.
The Lady Buddha at Linh Ung Pagoda
Linh Ung Pagoda sits on the hillside at Bai But on the Son Tra Peninsula, about 15 minutes' drive from the city. Its white Lady Buddha statue stands 67 metres tall on a lotus base and can be seen from My Khe Beach and from boats far offshore. The complex was completed in 2010. Dress respectfully: shoulders and knees covered.
The rest of Son Tra
Beyond the pagoda, the peninsula is forested hills and coastal roads with lookouts over the bay and the city. The roads are steep and winding, so it is best done with a driver or on a guided jeep tour rather than on a hired scooter. Our Beyond Golf page includes a private Son Tra jeep tour.
Marble Mountains
The Marble Mountains are five limestone and marble hills between Da Nang and Hoi An, close to several of the golf courses. Steps and an elevator lead up to cave temples, grottoes and viewpoints over the coast. At the foot of the hills is the stone-carving village. Go early: the steps are steep and the caves are cooler before the midday heat.
Fitting them in
- Marble Mountains pairs well with a round at one of the courses south of the city.
- Son Tra is at its best late in the afternoon, finishing with sunset over the city.
- Wear proper shoes; the steps at both are uneven and slippery after rain.
- Carry water and small change for entry fees and drinks.
Common questions
Can older travellers manage the Marble Mountains?
Yes, with care. The elevator on Thuy Son, the main hill, cuts out most of the climb, though some caves still involve steps.
