Singapore golfers are spoiled for proximity when it comes to regional golf. Johor Bahru is 30 minutes away, Batam not much longer. Bintan, Desaru, Hua Hin - all within easy reach for a long weekend. But for a genuine golf trip - something with championship-quality courses, world-class resort infrastructure, a meaningful cultural experience and days rather than hours of playing time - Vietnam has become the answer more Singapore golfers are arriving at. And the numbers make it obvious why.
Da Nang, the hub of Vietnam's central coast golf corridor, is a direct 3.5-hour flight from Singapore Changi on multiple carriers. No layover, no jet lag, no long-haul compromise. You board the plane with your clubs at dawn and you are on the first tee of a Nick Faldo or Robert Trent Jones Jr-designed course by early afternoon the same day.
The Flight Case: Why Vietnam Is Actually Closer Than You Think
Singapore Changi to Da Nang: approximately 3 hours 20 minutes. Singapore Changi to Hanoi: approximately 3 hours 35 minutes. Both cities are served by direct flights from Changi, with Vietnam Airlines, Scoot, Singapore Airlines and Vietjet all operating regular services.
Return economy fares from Singapore typically range from SGD $200 to $500, depending on carrier and how far in advance you book. Business class options with Vietnam Airlines run SGD $700 - $1,200 return. For a 7-night golf trip, the flight cost represents a relatively small fraction of the total budget - and it is dramatically less than the equivalent from Australia or Europe.
The time zone is particularly friendly for Singapore-based travellers. Vietnam runs UTC+7, which is one hour behind Singapore Standard Time. There is no meaningful jet lag in either direction, and your body clock barely registers the change. This matters more than golfers typically admit: being properly rested on the first morning is the difference between shooting your handicap and struggling around in the heat.
Vietnam vs Bali and Phuket: The Honest Comparison
Singapore golfers have traditionally looked to Bali and Phuket as the default regional golf destinations. Both are excellent in their own way - but the comparison with central Vietnam's golf circuit reveals a meaningful quality gap.
Bali's golf courses are enjoyable but modest by international standards. The island's best-known courses - Nirwana Bali and New Kuta - offer pleasant tropical surroundings and good facilities, but none would rank among Asia's top 20 layouts. Green fees typically run USD $80 - $150 for premium Bali courses.
Phuket offers a stronger circuit, with Blue Canyon Country Club and Red Mountain Golf Club providing genuine quality. But the island's courses are spread across a challenging road network, and peak-season crowds on the most popular layouts can be frustrating.
Vietnam's central coast, by contrast, hosts a concentration of genuinely world-class courses that would compete with the best resort golf anywhere in the world. Montgomerie Links plays links-style golf along the beachfront. Hoiana Shores (Robert Trent Jones Jr design) sits on natural dune terrain of a quality rarely found outside the British Isles. Ba Na Hills (Luke Donald) offers mountain-elevated golf with extraordinary panoramas. Laguna Lang Co (Sir Nick Faldo) runs along a pristine lagoon and beachfront. These are not "good for Asia" - they are good, full stop.
Currency and Pricing: Why SGD Stretches Further in Vietnam
The Singapore Dollar buys considerable value in Vietnam. The Vietnamese Dong exchange rate means that accommodation, food and on-course costs represent excellent purchasing power for SGD earners. A post-round meal at a quality Da Nang restaurant with fresh seafood, local beer and dessert runs SGD $20 - $40 per person. A 60-minute sports massage at a day spa in Hoi An costs around SGD $20 - $30.
ASEAN Links packages are priced in AUD, which also works favourably for SGD holders at current exchange rates. The Hoi An: Links & Lanterns tour (Aug 9-15, 2026 - 7 days/6 nights - AUD $3,199 per person) and the Da Nang: Dragon & Dunes tour (Aug 16-22, 2026 - 7 days/6 nights - AUD $3,399 per person) both represent strong value when converted from SGD at current rates - and both are all-inclusive of accommodation, tee times and transfers.
Vietnam E-Visa: Simple and Straightforward for Singapore Passport Holders
Singapore passport holders can enter Vietnam on a 45-day e-visa, available entirely online. The process is straightforward and typically processed within 3 business days. The fee is USD $25 for a single entry, USD $50 for multiple entry. The e-visa covers both land and air entry, so there is no need to visit an embassy or submit a paper application.
Singapore passport holders previously qualified for Vietnam visa exemption for stays under 30 days, but current requirements mean the e-visa is the most reliable option for golf trips of 7 or more nights. Always verify current requirements at the official Vietnam Immigration portal before travel.
Malaysian passport holders are generally visa-exempt for Vietnam for stays under 30 days. Hong Kong passport holders should check current requirements, as conditions vary depending on document type. The ASEAN Links team is happy to advise on current entry requirements for all nationalities joining the tours.
Best Time to Visit Vietnam from Singapore
Central Vietnam - the Da Nang and Hoi An corridor where most of the top courses are located - has distinct seasons. The optimal golf window runs from February through August, when temperatures are warm, humidity is manageable and rainfall is minimal.
- February - April: Excellent conditions. Temperatures around 25-30°C, low humidity, occasional morning mist. The North to Coast itinerary runs in early March 2027, catching the tail of the best weather window.
- May - August: Hot but typically dry on the coast. This is peak season for the Da Nang corridor. The ASEAN Links August 2026 tours - Hoi An Links & Lanterns and Da Nang Dragon & Dunes - are timed for this window.
- September - November: The central Vietnam rainy and typhoon season. Travel is not recommended for golf during this period.
- December - January: Cooler, drier conditions returning. Still playable but lighter rounds of clothing than February and beyond.
For Singapore golfers, the August timing of the 2026 tours aligns conveniently with school holiday periods and is a manageable leave request for most working professionals - 7 days on the ground, with manageable flight times at either end.
What to Bring: A Singapore Golfer's Packing List
Central Vietnam in August runs warm and occasionally humid. Pack accordingly:
- Lightweight, moisture-wicking golf shirts (collared, as most courses require collars)
- UV-protection cap or hat - sun exposure on coastal courses is significant
- Polarised sunglasses - reduces glare dramatically on beachside and lagoon courses
- Sunscreen SPF 50+ - apply before leaving the hotel, not just at the course
- One light-layer midlayer for air-conditioned transfer vehicles and restaurants
- Electrolyte tablets - staying hydrated in the heat is important for performance across multi-day rounds
- Casual clothes for evenings in Hoi An - the lantern-lit Ancient Town rewards an evening or two of proper exploration
